MUSIC IN NEW MALDEN – July 2020

We may still be unable to bring you ‘live’ concerts from Music in New Malden due to Coronavirus, but that doesn’t mean the music has stopped…

A little taster of what is to come in the next season on the links below.

In this first link, you will be able to access John Irving’s introduction exploring the 48 Preludes and Fugues of Johann Sebastian Bach (from his timeless Well-Tempered Clavier).  This link will take you to the Music in New Malden YouTube channel.

We have also loaded a link to John performing six of Johann Sebastian Bach Prelude and Fugues from Book 1.

These are stored as individual videos (one for each of the individual Preludes and Fugues). The performances are in a numbered sequence (from 1-12 – beginning with the C major Prelude & Fugue from Bk.1). You can listen in any order you like, of course, but the works were organised in a deliberate sequence to highlight the contrasting characters and technical procedures, as John notes in his Introduction.

Please click on the link below to take you through to the performances of the individual Preludes and Fugues.

Programme:

Johann Sebastian BACH

Six Preludes and Fugues from Book 1 of The Well-Tempered Clavier (Das Wohltemperirte Clavier), BWV 846-869 (1722).

John Irving (piano)

C major BWV 846

A flat Major BWV 862

E major BWV 854

G major BWV 860

B major BWV 868

D major BWV 850

Here is John Irving, playing some extracts from Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata, and discussing the type of piano that this piece would have first been played on.  We look forward to hearing the complete sonata in the next concert series and celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven.

While we are waiting for news on when we can restart our Sunday afternoon concerts in New Malden Methodist Church, we are planning to kick-off Series 13 (2020-21) by recording three ‘virtual’ autumn recitals to be viewed on our YouTube page.  We will post links here on our website, but just to alert you, the recital dates are provisionally booked for 13 September, 11 October and 8 November.

We plan to open our concert series in September with a programme of Schubert song arrangements for horn and piano, played by Ursula Paludan Monberg and John Irving.  You may remember their ‘Crazy Horn’ concert of virtuoso showpieces back in Series 11 (2018).  Our hope is that we can return to live concerts in New Malden Methodist Church from Spring 2021.

We will be able to announce our full programming details shortly, but in the meantime, some provisional dates for your diary.
